Gary Wilcox and his wife Tammy own and operate a unique mobile, shop-at-home flooring business in Texas aptly named Pet Floors of Houston.
The couple have been selling Karndean for almost 10 years now and for the last four years they’ve sold Karndean exclusively, finding a niche in pet flooring. The photo above is just one example of Gary’s work – an installation of our Art Select Autumn Oak.
We spent a few minutes with Gary to learn more about his relationship with Karndean and his unique business. Check out the full interview below:
Q. How did you first learn about Karndean Designflooring?
It was April 2004 and I was at a Home and Garden show. At that time, I was selling all different types of flooring. One of the salesman on the stand called me over and asked me to check out his LVT. At first I was thinking “Please, no. Not one more thing to sell,” but I went over and he showed me Karndean. I was stunned at how realistic and beautiful it was. I knew I wasn’t providing something as high quality as Karndean to my customers and had to sell it.
Q. As one of our most successful retailers in the U.S., what do you think is the secret behind your success?
Being a mobile showroom was not a natural fit for Karndean, but it ended up working out for both of us I think. I love the product because it is high quality, cost-effective, and I never felt like I had to compete. It’s so different from everything else out there. The designs are very realistic and my customers are looking for two things – the beautiful look and the performance. Karndean delivers just that.
Q. What do you think sets you apart from other flooring retailers?
For one, I have an eye for design and with Karndean being so versatile, I can experiment with laying patterns and designs. It gives me a leg up because I know what to do with designflooring. It’s just my wife and I, so I take my business very seriously and am committed to selling Karndean, and that shows through to our customers.
Q. What’s the story behind your business shift over to a very specific focus on “pet flooring”?
I was doing so much work for people with pets and got amazing feedback from these customers about how much they loved their Karndean floors. It wasn’t even my idea initially—in 2005, I put Karndean in a home owned by a dog breeder and after that job, the woman suggested I go to the Word Series of Dog Shows and exhibit. I had so much interest at that show and started to think it might be beneficial to just change my business model and go to pet shows as well as consumer shows.
Q. Do you have any stand-out Karndean installation stories you’d like to share?
I have so many—everyday is a good Karndean story. I will tell you about a woman whose house got completely shredded during Hurricane Ike in 2008. She called me up and said her house was demolished, but her Karndean floors were still beautiful. This woman pulled 34 gallons of water off her floor and other than fixing one small area of shoe molding, the floor was in perfect shape. She was so impressed with the performance and quality of Karndean, I went back a few weeks later and ripped up the carpet in the master bedroom and put Karndean down in that area, too!
